Paper Usage at SAE!!!

Today you had a chance to hear from the leaders of Seven Arrows about how we use paper here. You probably found out that we sometimes use paper wisely, and often use paper unwisely!!

For this week's homework assignment, we want you to think about all the information shared by the panelists today. Consider the following questions:

What do you think we could do better?

What ideas do you have about how we can reduce our use of paper?

What ideas do you have about how we can do a better job of recycling?

What are some ways we can save money with paper, and save trees at the same time?

What will happen if we don't start reducing our use?

Think back (or reivew) the post, "Important Tree Facts" (posted below). How many trees does our paper usage equal? How can you find out?

We want you to post your ideas in response to today's class and share your ideas. Eventually we will look at all the ideas and create a plan for "leading the way" in reducing our use of paper here at school.

I think that we could do better in many ways! Here is a small list of things that we need to improve on:
1. Using less paper
2. Using extra paper to make scratch paper.
Some ideas to reduce our paper usage are:
1. To email things we do in-class to our teacher, instead of printing them out.
2. Recycle
3. Dont print out a document unless it is 100% complete AND Spelling/Grammer is 100% Correct!
1 word: Recycle. If we recycled paper on our own we could save lots of money AND trees! Even if it is more money, who cares, it saves the environment! if we dont start helping the environment we will loose all the essential things that we need to live!

Jerish, I love your ideas! I especially like the one about not printing until you are 100% sure that the document is ready to be printed (complete and spell-checked!). So many times I hit that print button befor I am completely done! What a great idea =-)

Ten things we can do:

1) We can ask parents to sign up to get Arrow Dynamics by email. Only parents who request a paper copy will get one. We should encourage parents to sign up to get this by email only.

2) We should make sure everyone especially the office uses both sides of paper before recycling. We can use paper twice before we recycle it.

3) We should put a sign in the bathroom and ask people to only use one paper towel to dry their hands.

4) Only buy recycled paper for everything even though it is more money. This is okay because we will save money by using less paper.

5) We can use email as much as possible instead of paper.

6) I think that having a website is a good idea because people can get information without printing out paper.

7) In the office, we should put an extra large recycling bin so you don't throw it away and that provides less paper usage.

8) Fourth and up should do their homework online just like masters. That leaves us with more money for recycled paper.

9) All ages should bring their own water containers,
because our water cups aren't recyclable because they are waxed inside. We also use a lot.

10) We could all bring (including teachers) cloth napkins instead of paper napkins for lunch and snack.

What we could do better is buy recycled paper and then recycle the recycled paper.

To reduce our paper use, we could encourage everyone to use metal water containers instead of the paper cups.

To both reduce paper use and encourage recycling, we could put the recycling bin in the classroom and the trash bin outside, so there is more incentive to recycle since it would be easier.

It would be best to send out the ArrowDynamics online, and also send other paper notices online. This would also save money in the cost of paper and printing.

We have to take steps to reduce and recycle paper because the Amazon deforestation is happening at an increasing rate, and this is terrible for our environment.

I agree with everyone so far. I also
think that we should put the recycling bin
in peoples offices, and put the trash in the hallway. That way, people would be encouraged to recycle more. But better still, we
should try hard to use less paper,
even if we do recycle it.
What is better for the environment,
one sheet of paper being thrown away,or 50000000 sheets of paper being recycled? I think probably the first one.

Just like Paul said, so far I agree with everyone! These are all such great ideas that can really help. Now I will share some ideas of my own.
(1. RECYCLE!!!!! Even just one sheet of paper being thrown away can damage our beautiful planet.
(2. Give a time everyday to 4th and up to go into the lab and do homework on the computers instead of printing out a sheet, writing on it, getting it checked, and then thrown away, we should get it sent to our emails, complete it online, then send it back to our teachers who will then write a comment back to us. It might take a bit of a longer routine, but hey, it's definitely worth it!
(3. Buy (if not all recycled paper,) at least 60% recycled paper for all of the classrooms and offices.
(4. Just like Zoe said, having a website is definitely a good idea so people can check out what is going on in our school without using paper.
(5. If we don't start using less paper, in a long time from now, our favorite little places to sit, in nature, will become landfills and we will regret not recycling and making a bigger effort towards our planet.
(6. Like a lot of people have been talking about, everyone should bring a reusable water container to school. Some kids may forget or say "well since every body else is using reusable water bottles, I guess it's ok for just me to use to paper cups," but if we decorated them or made it fun to bring reusable water bottles every day, then our school would be further on it's way to being fully GREEN!!!
(7. I definitely agree with Jerish when he said don't print out anything until it is 100% spell corrected and grammar corrected, that would save a lot of paper.
(8. If you recycle plastic bottles, they can be made into the clothes your are wearing. People need to realize that if you recycle something, it usually has a second life as something else.
(9. Use reusable cups and plates, not paper plates and cups because often times they have wax and are not recyclable.
(10. Trees are very important to our lives, without them we would run out of oxygen and die. So it it important that we don't cut down too many trees for paper when we already have so much!

I think that we could tell ever one about the news letter at kuyam or something like that. We can do much better at recycling. I think that if the school could raise more money to by 100% recycled products that be be really cool. We would raise the money because I know that recycled paper is pricy. I remember when I was in 4th grade we had a compation who could get the most tin foil. My class won and we ended up getting a lot of tin foil. So I know it might sound like bribing but sometimes if you do something fun but important at the same time you will get a lot done.

I think that Seven Arrows could use paper a lot better. For example I have observed my class mates throwing paper in the trash bin. we could change that by putting the recycling and trash bin next to each other. A way to reduce is to use our slates and markers more.

The ways that I can make sure that I conserve more are...
1. make sure my document is completely ready for printing (spell check, aproved by a teacher, that i'm actually supposed to print it.
2. do drafts on the computer so that i only print once.
3. make others aware of the effect wasting paper has on our earth.

1 Email arrows dinamics
2 Write on both sides
3 use recycle paper
4 recycle
5 Don't send home something twice
6 give only one thing to a family
7 use checo bag
8 use recycled plates
9 copy on reclcyled paper

if i had posted earlier, every body wouldn't have taken every thing. now i have nothing to say. i usually talk about why shouldn't do something in class cause it's a wast of paper. so i guess i just need to make my plans heard. PS mom stop printing stuff that don't need to be.

1) I think that we could recycle more often.

2) We can use both sides of the paper.

3) Like I said above we can use both sides of the paper, we can also have the teachers have a bin for scratch paper were we can put papers we are done with in and other students can use it. This way when they go into the recycling bin they are truly ready to be recycled.

4) We can again use both sides of the paper and do most of our work on the computer.

5) There will be less trees and more smog.

well, i wasn't here on this day, but i think that we could
1) buy recycled paper
2) recycle more often
3) maybe make our own paper
4) the teachers could use both sides of papers and we could reuse some of the paper, for scratch paper or art projects
we could do a better job at recycling if we put a bin in every room for each kind of recyclables such as cans, paper, plastic, glass, etc.
we could save money and trees by making our own paper.
if we don't start reducing our use of paper, we will get a lot more pollution and smog.
we could find out how much paper we use if we keep all the paper we recycle in one week, count it, and then determine how much we would use in a month/year.
