Solar Collection Experiment

In today's experiment, you collected water in containers with black or white bottoms, with or with out a lid.

What is your prediction about how the temperature of the water will be effected? (write your predictions)

How did the actual results of the experiment differ from your initial predictions?

I THINK THE CLOSED BLACK ONE WILL BE THE HOTTEST, OPEN BLACK 2ND HOTTEST, CLOSED WHITE 2ND COLDEST, AND OPEN WHITE COLDEST.

I predicte that the black paper will make it hotter so the white will do opposite. I predict useing a miror will make it hotter. Not useing the top will probably ake it colder because the top is kinnda like a magnafine glass.

Solar predictions

1. The black with cover is the warmest because light is atracted to black and the light can't escape because of the lid
2. The Whit with cover will be 2nd warmest because the light will get captured by the lid
3. The black with no cover is 2nd coldest because it has no cover but it is black so it will be warm
4. The white with no cover is the coldest because it has no cover and is white

MY RESULTS WERE:
BLACK COVER-20, 25, 27
BLACK NO COVER-20, 19, 20
WHITE COVER-20, 24, 25
WHITE NO COVER-20, 19, 20

I WAS OFF WITH WHITE COVER AND BLACK NO COVER. I SWITCHED THEM AROUND. I WOULD NEVER EXPECT THAT THE WHITE NO COVER AND BLACK NO COVER WOULD BE THE SAME.

I think that the water will heat up in all four containers -- the white with a lid, the white without a lid, the black with a lid, and the black without a lid.
But the water will heat up the most in the black containers because black absorbs heat and white reflects heat. Also, the black without a lid will be the hottest because the light will not have been filtered by the plastic lid. But it will be the opposite with the white. White reflects, so the white with a lid will trap the heat and not let it bounce away. The order will be this: black without a lid hottest, black with a lid next hottest, white with a lid after that, and white without a lid coldest.

Jack Koplin,

1.At first I thought that the black bottom container with the top on it would be the hottest because the heat would be trapped inside of it and black absorbes heat.

2. I also thought that the black bottom with no top would be the second hottest, if it doesn't trap the heat then at least it absorbs it.

3. I thought the third hottest was the white bottom with the top on it because it would trap the heat.

4. I thought the coolest container would be the one with the white bottom and no top because white doesn't absorb heat.

I was wroung with my predictions. The water started at 20 degress Black and white with no cover and both after 5 minutes were 17.
White with cover started as 25 and after 5 minutes at 20.
Black with cover started at 20 and 5 minutes later no change.

I predict the black paper with the lid will be the hottest and the black paper with no lid will be the second hottest, because black paper can absorb more heat. I also predict the white paper with the lid will be the second coldest and the white paper with no lid will be the coldest.

Solar results the results were very different than I expected. Instead of the black with a cover was the 2nd warmest which is the same as black with no cover. White with the cover the warmest and it was 24 and white with no cover was 16 the coldest

The first prediction that I made was that the container with the black paper would heat up more quickly than the container with the white paper in it. I thought this because I thought that with the black paper absorbing more light than the white paper, for the white paper reflected the light back to the top, therefore loosing heat fromthe container without the lid and creating condensation with the container the had the lid, that the containers with the black paper would contain more heat, making the water heat more quickly.
My next pidiction was that the water with the black paper and the lid would heat qucker than the rest. I think this because the black paper would absorb more heat than the white paper and the lid on the black paper water would keep the heat inside of the water, heating it more quickly.
My last prediction is that the water with the mirror will heat more quickly than its twins (the one with the same color paper and the one that is in the same conditions as it). I'm not positive though, that if the mirror was being held up to the water with the white paper, with or without the lid, that it would heat faster than the container containing the water with the black paper and the lid.

My prediction is that the black paper with the lid and not with the lid are going to the HOTTEST. i think that the one with the lid on the white paper and with out are going to not get HOT.i think they are going to get colder or stay the same.

what the temp was when we started:
1.20 for the white no cover
2.20 black no cover
3.25 with cover
4.20 no cover

after 5 min:
1.17
2.173. 20
3. 20
4.20

after 10 min:
1.18
2. 20
3.24
4.20

Prediction: I think that with the black paper it will absorb the light, and with the white paper it will reflect the light. The closed black container will not be able to get inside the container as easy as the open one. The closed white one will be the coldest because its hard to get in and it will reflect the light.

Prediction-- I think that the experiment with the white no-lid water cup will not get as warm as the black paper ones. First the electrons will reflect and since it has no cover the heat will reflect and since it has no cover the heat will just move to another place. White with a cover will be a little warmer because the cover will be there to trap the electrons. So it will remain warm. I think that the black paper will absobe the heat and the heat will transfer until all the water is hot. The black with cover will be the hottest because the lid will trap heat and it will get warmer...and warmer.... and WArMER!!!
