Today we have been learning about wind. As part of this investigation, you will explore a website that is all about wind and wind energy. Please look at the "Important Links" column to the right of this page, and click on the "What is Wind Energy?" link.
Your task is to conduct an information "scavenger hunt", gathering as much information about wind as you dare! The questions below will guide your search. Please post all of the information you found in response to the following questions. Thanks!
Questions:
1. What happens when cold air and warm air meet?
2. What are some things you found out about the Troposphere?
3. What happens to the air in the atmosphere as you get further and further away from the surface of the earth?
4. What are the two main causes of wind?
5. What effect does the sun have on creating wind?
We can't wait to see all that you have learned!

1. The warm air rises and the cold air sinks.
2. The Troposphere is the only layer in which we can breathe and it's about 10 km high.
3. When you get further and further away from Earth's surface the air gets thinner and you have trouble breathing.
4. The two main causes of wind are
a.) The sun doesn't heat the earth evenly
b.) The earth is always revolving on its own axis
5. The sun makes the earth hotter and different winds is created by the different temperatures and pressures.
Q 1. What happens when warm air and cold air meets?
A 1. warm air rises and cold air sinks.
Q 2. What are some things you found out about the troposhere?
A 2. It's the inner part of the atmoshere : It's 10 km and consists of air
Q 3. What happens to the atmoshere as you get further and further away form the surface of the earth?
A 3. The air gets thin and you start having trouble breathing.
Q 4. What are two main causes of wind?
A 4. a) the rotation of the earth
b) the difference in tempurature on earth
Q 5. What effect does the sun have on creating wind?
A 5. If the sun light is hitting certain places directly then there will be warm air. It creates different tempuratures around the world.
WHEN COLD AIR AND HOT AIR MEET, HOT AIR GOES UP WHILE COLD AIR GOES DOWN.
THE TROPOSPHERE IS ABOUT 10 FT. HIGH AND CAN HAVE WINDS UP TO 200 MPH.
WHEN AIR GETS FURTHER AWAY FROM THE EARTH, IT GETS COLDER (I DONT UNDERSTAND THAT BECAUSE WOULDN'T THE AIR GET CLOSER TO THE SUN?)
THE 2 MAIN CAUSES OF WIND ARE TEMP. AND PRESSURE.
THE SUN CAN MOVE THE AIR UP AND DOWN WHICH CREATES FAST WIND.
David, are you sure about the Troposphere only being 10 feet high? I think you should check this fact.
You are correct, the air does get colder the further you get away from the earth -- TO A POINT -- there is also a point at which temperatures get very hot. I think I have a resource on this -- I will try to get the link for you.
And lastly, think about this -- temperature and pressure do have something to do with creating wind -- but how? What is it about temperature that creates wind? What is it about pressure that creates wind?
Thanks for posting your answers!
#1. What happens when warm air and cold air meet?
When warm air and cold air meet, the warm air rises. The cold air sinks. This creates wind
#2. What are some things that you found out about the troposphere?
The troposphere is the inner layer of the atmosphere. It is 10 kilometers high. It is made of air.
#3. What happens to the air in the atmosphere as you get further and further from the surface of the earth?
The air gets thinner and harder to breathe. 8-10 kilometers above the earth, it is nearly impossible to breathe.
#4. What are the two main causes of wind?
a.) The earth is always moving around it's own axis
b.) The sun does not heat the earth evenly. The sun makes some air hotter than other air, thus making the cold air hot air wind pattern
#5. What effect does the sun have on creating wind?
The sun stirrs up the troposphere by warming only half of earth at a time, so that there is a night half and a day half. The cold air from the night half mixes with the warm air from the day half and creates wind. Without the sun, there would not be wind.

1. When cold air and warm air meet warm air rises and cold air sinks.
2. The Troposphere is the ONLY layer in which we can breath in. It is also only 8-10 kilometers high.
3. When you get further away from the surface of the Earth the air becomes thinner and thinner causing trouble to breath. A family friend told me that he grew up in high mountains and that he has strong lungs because they had to adapt to the thinner and less oxygenated air.
4. The two main causes of wind are:
1. The earth revolves on its own axis
2. The sun doesn't heat or apply the same amount of pressure on the Earth evenly.
5. The sun provides temperature and pressure; temperature and pressure creates wind.
Q#1. What happens when cold air and warm air meet?
The warm air floats to the top and the cold air sinks to the bottom. When the warm air flows to the top, it leaves room for the cold air on the bottom. This creates wind.
Q#2. What are some things that you found out about the troposphere? The troposphere is about 10 kilometers high and consists mainly of air.
Q#3. What happens to air in the atmosphere as you get further and further from the surface of the earth?
Farther and farther away from the earth, the atmosphere gets thinner and thinner, therefor making it harder or impossible for a human to breath.
Q#4. What are the two main causes of wind?
1) One cause for wind is that the earth spins around its own axis.
2) Another reason is that the sun doesn't heat the earth evenly. Some air is hotter than other air. When the two tempuratures of air combine, it creates wind.
Q#5. What effect does the sun have on creating wind?
The sun's rays don't always heat the earth evenly. It creates cold air and warm air. When those two airs combine, they create wind. The sun plays a critical part in the creating of wind. Without the sun, there would probabyly be no wind.
1.The warm air rises, and the cold air rushes to fill in the vacuum space. thereby creating wind.
2.The troposhphere is about 10 kilometers high and consists of air.
3.The atmosphere gets thinner, therefore making it hard or impossible to breathe.
4. a.)Earth is always revolving on its axis. b.) The sun does not heat Earth evenly.
5.The sun's rays do not heat Earth evenly, but where it does heat, it creats warm air. When the cooler air and the warmer air meet, it creates wind.
