Learning About Paper Production...

Hello MASTERS Students!!

For your homework this week, you've been asked to learn a little bit more about paper production. We have collected MANY different resources that you can take a look at to learn more. You do NOT have to read every single one. We just wanted to give you some choices.

Take a look through the websites and read those that seem interesting to you. We have also included as part of this blog post a couple of videos that you can watch on paper production.

While you read, or watch the videos, please think about:

How is paper production affecting the environment?

How much energy does it take to make paper?

What is better, recycle paper or use less paper?

What takes more energy, recycling paper or making electricy to power computers?

After you have read through a couple of the articles and maybe watched a video or two, please post your comments in response to this blog post. In your response, please share what you have learned about paper production so far, and whether or not you have any feelings about how we use paper at our school, in our homes, and even in our community.

I learned that toilet paper isn't mixed with toxic chemicals, but regular paper is.

I learned that people waste a lot of paper! In the video it showed that they are cutting down trees to make new paper when we already have paper we just need to recycle it. Its a big waste!

Why do they burn so much bark? This makes more CO2 which increases global warming.

One thing that I learned was that the paper industry is putting toxic waste in our water which is polluting it. The paper industry also creates greenhouse gases.

Less than 8% of printing and writing paper is made from recycled paper and it only costs 20 cents more to make a book from recycled paper. People even said that they would pay more for books made from recycled paper.

The paper industry uses 4% of the worlds energy.
We need to use less paper and if you have to use paper use recycled paper.

Paper production affects the environment tremendously. It uses a lot of logs; 20,000,000 trees are cut down yearly to make paper. Paper production is the third highest emitter of greenhouse gasses.

It is better to recycle than to just use less. It takes half as much energy to make recycled paper as it does to make new paper from trees. And, you save a tree for every 4 feet of paper you recycle! Also, when paper is recycled, then less is going into landfills. Finally, if all books were printed on recycled paper, then the forests would begin to heal.

Paper production takes a lot of the worlds energy. 4% to be more exact. About 40% of office paper we use ends up in overly filled landfills. If we used recycled paper, we would be saving energy, reducing the amount of greenhouse gases going into the air, and helping to save our planet!

Thank you for helping me on this, Anastasia.
I think I figured it out.
Best,

I think that we need to conserve a lot more trees. over 20,000,000 trees are cut down in a year to make paper. A lot of people are putting paper in the trash and filling up our landfills. If people were to recycle paper instead we would be saving a lot of trees, and reducing the greenhouse gasses that are going into the air.

I learned that toilet paper is made from recycled paper. I never knew that before. It was very cool to learn that when the wood is being broken down the remaining oil, which is usually a lot is reused to work the factory. Well I know that our school recycles so that is helping out the paper production without cutting down tees but it still takes a lot of energy t make paper. My family got a recycle bin for the inside as well as we have one for the outside so we can recycle more.

I learned that toilet paper is regular paper and I realize that we use far too much of it. I thionk that everyone should recycle. We have done it at home for a long time, ever since I can remember. I know that a lot people do not recycle and I think it's really sad.I also think that we should use less paper. We all use our computers a lot more.

I remember learning in Tech last year that Toilette paper is dipped in toxic materials! I geuss that site was wrong! =\

i think that making copy paper is wasteful. i learned that for every 3 tons of wood, 1 ton of paper is made. these videos are very interesting and cool. so are the websites. i learned a lot from these videos and i cant wait to learn more.

wow that's cool vikings used wool for toilet paper, wow. some people used leaves.

How is paper production affecting the environment?
It is causing 20 million trees to be cut down every year just for the making of paper. The paper production is the third highest emmiter of the industrial greenhouse gasses to the air in the world. Paper production is causing lots of bad things to happen in the world.

What is better, recycling paper or using it less?
It is much more expensive to buy the recycled paper as opposed to the normal paper, but less trees will be cut down. The landfills will also be decreased. It seems like it is expensive to be green.

How much energy does it take to make paper?
It takes two gallons of gasoline to make a round of paper.

I couldn't find anything about weather computers or paper take up less energy, but I am guessing that paper takes up more energy.

Other interesting facts that I found
Paper is made of a paste made from 65% maple 25% birch, and 10% bopler. It requires two tons of wood to produce one ton of the paste. The soon to be paper is mixed with copious amounts of chemicals for it to become white. One roll of the paper contains 35 tons and 37 miles of paper. The production of paper reaches 55 thousand sheets per minute. Toilet paper is made of recycled paper, the Chinese invented it.
