Today we went to the Santa Monica City Recycling Center. It was so interesting to see the ways in which the City of Santa Monica is trying to reduce the amount of trash going to the landfills. I, for one, learned so much!!
What did you learn? What crazy or interesting fact are swirling around in your head?
In response to this post, write three comments that meet the following:
1. What is something that "squared" with you (something that you agree with, or makes sense to you)
2. What is something that is still going "round and round" in your mind (in other words, what questions do you still have?)
3. What are the THREE most important things you will remember?
I can't wait to see what you come up with!

1.I AGREE THAT IT'S IMPORTANT TO RECYCLE.
2.WHAT DO THEY DO WHEN THEY GET AN OVERLOAD?
3.REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE!
1. What is something that "squared" with you (something that you agree with, or makes sense to you)
1.A)I agree and now i get why people make such a big deal. now i understand to recycle and i will make a much bigger effort to recycloe.
2. What is something that is still going "round and round" in your mind (in other words, what questions do you still have?)
2.a)I asked this question there but i am still amazed how big the piles of things get and how people get up there. I can only imagine in years how it would be like.
3. What are the THREE most important things you will remember?
3.a)REDUCE REUSE AND RECYCLE
When I went to the Recycling center I was amazed at how much recycable things were there and how they reduce it. They put it in a machine and the machine compacts it into a cube.
1. Something that is squared with me is that we need to always re-use bottles.
2. How much money is it to build the center with the machine and everytthing else.
3. The 3 most imporatant things that I will remember is that a lot of trash is burried in the burrying place. A lot of recycable things are worth money. Also many things can be recycable.
1. WE SHOULDN'T BURRIED AWAY WHAT WE CAN REUSE.
2. HOW MUCH MONEY CAN 1 TON IN ALUMINUM COST?
3.
A. METAL IS MADE OUT OF ROCK.
B. ALUMINUM IS MADE OUT OF A TRIOPICAL ROCK.
C. THE JACK-IN-THE-BOX COUPON
I loved the recycle place. David found a jack in the box cupon, and is going to use it with jack. I agree with every thing he said. 1. that the land fill is over flowing.2. They turned recycalables in to blocks 3. A lot of people don't reycycle.
1. I think it was cool that David rfound a coupon.
2. The things were square.
3. The car ride was fun.
i learneed that it is very impotant to recycle and if you dont i t means more time and money to the recycliong center. the factet the was in my head that i asked was what was the wierds thing that happined there. what do u do if there is a lot of wind. i agree with them do9ng it by hand and not doing it with mathen. iknow they will hace to do it with a machen soon but i agree with that to. impotanate things you should remember is ALWAYS redus reuse and recyle
1. I agree that it is a lot easier to recycle now instead of having to pay for it later.
2. I still have the queustion -- What does the Santa Monica Recycling Center do when there is a lot of wind?
3. I will remember to reduce, reuse, and recycle because that can make a difference. I will always make sure i am not throwing out valuable things.
This field trip was a lot of fun!
#1. What is something that "squared with you (something that you agree with, or makes sense to you)?
Something that squared with me was when our tour guide, Andrew, was showing us all the 'valuable' items that were going to be sent to the landfill and he told us that it is EXTREMELY important to recycle. He also taught us the three R's: Reduce, Reduce, Recycle. I agree that recycling is important because most of the recycalable items are really, really expencive to make.
#2. What is something that is still going "round and round" in your mind (in other words, what questions do you still have?)
Some questions that I still have are:
a) Why are different colored glass bottles sorted into different groups? I suppose the answer is that it is because they are different types of glass, but I never heard of a different types of glass.
b) What happens to the trash and paper piles when there's a lot of wind?
#3. What are the THREE most important things you will remember?
The three most important things that I will remeber are the three R's: REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE!!!
1. Something that squared with me is the idea that it takes A LOT of energy to make something from scratch, when it would take a lot less energy to just remake the same thing from recycled materials.
2. Something still going round and round in my mind is something that Andrew said about making metals, specifically aluminum. He said that we get metal from rocks (or ores), and that aluminum, specifically comes from tropical forests. He said that we have to clear away the trees to get to the rocks. And then, we have to use a lot of fuel and energy to break up the rocks, and melt the rocks into the molten ore that will eventually become metal. But my question is, so we just cut down the trees, and think about the whole ecosystem being destroyed by cutting down the trees? Especially in a tropical forest!
3. Three points to remember include: always recycle plastic bottles, cardboard, and paper, (2) you can earn a lot of money for recycling scrap metal, and (3) all of this trash has got to go somewhere -- so we really need to reduce our waste, re-use what we can, and recycle as much as possible!!
